Question : I want to know about how writing our own feelings can help us cope with anxiety or loneliness? I always think about this. I haven’t tried yet but I want to know how that works? Teentalker
Dear Teentalker,
Thanks for reaching out.
Writing is like a therapeutic process that helps one understand their thoughts and feelings more clearly. It’s also called journaling. It helps in gaining control of your own emotions. While you write, you also get a chance to explore your thoughts and feelings.
It helps you in putting your frustrations in the paper and trying to deal with them. You can say that writing is like photographing your feelings and then looking into them, and while you look into them you can see through different perspectives.
There are 3 major things that happen when you write your thoughts –
- You give names to your feelings and fears.
- You process your feelings
- You gain a different perspective
In case you haven’t written before, first ask yourself what you are feeling at this moment and just start writing your feelings down. It doesn’t matter whether it’s on a pen or paper, or as a document on your PC.
Allow yourself 5 minutes for writing and till the time is over just keep writing the thoughts that come to your mind. After 5 minutes of writing, you will realize the difference when you started, and when you ended writing. Try this and let us know how you feel after writing.
