Question : A boy in my class proposed to me but i rejected. Now he is spreading rumours that we are committed. If this news will reaches my parents and teachers, I will be in trouble.

Dear Teentalker,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your concerns.

It must be really distressing for you to listen to false stories being spread about you and all because you rejected a guy! That must be really painful and also a very valid concern, since these stories about you being in a so called relationship seems to be going around rather fast!

Now, let’s try to understand things from the boy’s perspective:

He proposed to you, but you didn’t reciprocate his feelings, which must have hurt him a great deal and so probably must be feeling, “this can’t be happening for real” or “how could she possibly reject me?” or “Maybe I’m not good enough for her” or “I’m inadequate”. Accepting reality can sometimes seem really painful and so to make up for it try to turn things in his favour, he is doing whatever he can to make things work. However, when human beings solely act on their emotions, they tend to overlook the bigger picture and in the process might not realize the intense damage they’re doing in the process and in your case, the damage being done is to spread rumours.

So, here’s what you can do in order to diffuse the situation:

Talk to your parents and family first about what actually happened, before they hear it from someone else. Even if you’re scared to talk about it, you’re better off being the one to tell them what happened, rather than them hearing some false story about your so-called relationship from some other source.

Try confiding in your teachers or at least the teacher you’re most comfortable with and let him/her know about the incident. That way, if, things spiral out of control the school authority is atleast aware of the situation and the reality!

At this juncture, if you’re feeling scared and wondering how to go about sharing all this information, then it’s okay to feel that way. What you might want to do is reassure your parents and let them know that you’re serious about your future and intend to follow through your short-term and long-term goals.

Hope this helps! If you need further clarifications, please feel free to write back or you can chat with the Teentalk Experts from Mondays to Saturdays: 11am -8pm
