Loss of a parent can be one of the hardest experiences to cope with at any given age. Grief becomes an ongoing part of our lives and travelling through this journey of healing may take several turns as we go forward in it. Dealing with the loss of a parent is painful. We should understand that grieving is an individual experience and there is no right or wrong way of dealing with pain.
Ways to Cope with Loss of a Parent:
1.Accept and face your feelings: Suppressing your feeling will be temporary but you can’t really avoid it. So in order to heal it’s better to acknowledge the pain and accept it. Hiding your sadness or loss will increase the time to heal from the loss. Also remember that emotions when not dealt in the right way or at right time will lead to number of other challenges like depression, substance abuse etc.
2. Express your feelings: Even if you find it difficult to talk about your loss it’s very important to express it so that you do not bottle them. Try writing down your feelings in a journal or a letter. It helps you release all that you have within and helps you cope with the loss.
3. Take care of your physical health: We all are well aware that there is a connection between physical and mental well-being. So if are physically fit your mind will be better at using coping strategies to deal with the loss.
4. Get back to routine or pursue a hobby: Sitting back and trying to accept feelings will be difficult. It is always a good idea to get back to your routine and join classes that interests you. As a hobby will bring you joy as that’s something you like doing. In this process you will also meet others and it might help you in the coping process
5. Seek professional help: To better cope with your anger, panic, fear it is advisable to seek help from a qualified therapist who will design strategies to help you cope with your emotional distress.
