Question: I have done many wrongs in my life. In comparison with the people around me, I feel I have done the worst of things. I have stopped all the nonsense things I used to do, but the guilt consciousness is traumatizing me and I feel like killing myself. Please help me. Teentalker

We are all human and it’s natural to make mistakes. We keep doing things that somehow affect others sometimes in a good or bad manner. Sometimes we just do things without knowing the impact on others. It’s very common and you don’t need to feel guilty.
I would like to tell you, you must not harm yourself with these feelings of guilt. Guilt is a feeling which comes in only when one realizes his/her mistakes. Realizing mistakes is like laying a foundation stone for correcting them. Rather than regretting your past actions and wrong, what you can do now is to take corrective measures so as to be careful next time.
Guilt must always be followed by self-forgiveness otherwise it might turn out to be self-destructive and might also sabotage your goals. Moreover, it is very much needed for one’s self–esteem to remain intact or else the frustration resulting from it will lead you to anger and resentment not only towards yourself but also towards others.
- To begin with, pen down the incidents or your mistakes that are bothering you currently.
- Find someone whom you can rely upon and discuss your feelings with him/her.
- Also, try to rationalize your thoughts, this will help you to overcome your guilt and will warn you like an alarm to be cautious in the future.
- Also it will help you if you identify your beliefs and values that govern your wrong actions and try to change them if found in discord with what you think presently.
